A CH-47 Chinook Very Large Helitanker (VLHT) with night-flying capability operated by Coulson Aviation is working under an 83-day contract in collaboration with Southern California Edison (SCE) and the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
The CH-47 Chinook is a heavy-lift helicopter produced by Boeing and named for the Chinook tribe of Native Americans. Since its inception, the CH-47 aircraft has served in nearly every major theater of conflict and participated in humanitarian aid missions in Africa and Haiti amongst others. The ICH program is intended to restore CH-47D airframes to their original condition and extend the aircraft's life expectancy another 20 years (total life of 60 years) until the 2025-2030 timeframe.
